I have been reading a lot of great articles lately that I feel compelled to share with you. It is all about education and increasing your knowledge base. That is probably the single most important thing that you can do in network marketing. Without it you will become so transparent you will be like dust in the midst of wind.

Anyway…

Over the last few days I have been really thinking about how I can be more effective using twitter. I understand the idea that surrounds it in making you more of an authority figure. At the same time, I didn’t really know how to go about creating a following of the magnitude you see around the internet. You know the videos, articles, etc that show you how you can get thousands of followers.

Now I would love to have thousand of followers on twitter but would it really be the most effective for my marketing. Ignoring my intuition I set an auto follower to follow people surrounding a certain niche or keywords. I was increasing my followers but I was following people I did NOT want to follow.

So then I started thinking about deleting the followers I didn’t want when I came across and article by John Reese called 5 Reason Why Twitter Auto-Follow is Bad Marketing.

Oh how things started to make sense…he literally took my thoughts combined them and made them make sense. It was like sending an angel from heaven. :)

In this article John (Reese) talks about 5 specific reasons that you shouldn’t auto-follow (like many people are doing).

Reason #1 – Twitter Auto-follow is like the old safe lists.

Now if you have been in this industry for a while than you damn sure know what a safe list is. For those of you that don’t know, it was an email opt-in system that was supposed to help marketers create more email subscribers. The problem with this system is that the more people who joined, the more emails you received. This would flood your inbox with thousands of emails making it impossible to read. So people start using a throw away email account so that they would have to be bothered with them. Which in turn made safe lists worthless marketing.

That is exactly what auto follow will do because the more people you auto follow the less you will see content. More importantly, the less they will see of your content.

With Twitter auto-follow you have no control over who you follow. Before removing followers, I was getting WAY to many tweets from more than one person. And they look like this:

Now I am going to assume that these people set up multiple accounts sending the same content every few minutes. It was INSANE! I was getting so much worthless information from them I wasn’t seeing the tweets that were worth my time.

Another example of the kind of people you can pick up with Twitter auto follow is:

Reason #2

No I am not going to go deep into reason #2 because John (Reese) just talks about the numbers being more ego purposes. I mean let’s be real, it looks good to see 10, 15, 20 thousand followers. People have bragging rights but the ego doesn’t pay the bills.

Reason #3

This reason I know to well and I was only following about 550 people before I stopped the Twitter auto follow.

Reason #3 talks about being bombarded with direct messages. See along with auto-follow, people can set it up where they auto-follow you in return and send a pre made direct message. This makes it impossible for you to check your messages without spending hours and hours on Twitter. Heck in the article 5 Reason Why Twitter Auto-Follow is Bad Marketing John (Reese) stated that he had over 6000 direct messages before he stopped following people. How are you suppose to accomplish that in day let alone a few hours?

Reason # 4

Here John (Reese) talks about the Twitter experience. Twitter is suppose to be a fun enjoyable experience. However, when there is a lot of static (worthless tweets) it sucks the fun out of it.

Reason # 5

This is probably the most important reason of them all. It’s about having credibility. Like I said before, Twitter is a place to present yourself as an authority figure (someone in the know) and that is impossible if you using Twitter auto-follow.

How can you create the image that you want to portray without any control over who you follow? You Can’t!

A perfect example is when I was following the ‘cat’ and the spammer. I was also following someone promoting more explicit content. Talking about dragging your reputation through the dirt…

So you must be careful on how you choose to add friends.

Now who in the right mind would really want to follow this “cat”? Are you kidding? But if you notice there are almost 16,000 followers. Many people (I’m sure) that don’t realize they are following a “cat” because they are auto-following.
